Imran Khan: Former Pakistan PM and wife Bushra Bibi jailed for corruption

Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been jailed for 14 years, the second sentence handed to Pakistan's former prime minister in two days.

The couple has been found guilty of unlawfully benefiting from state gifts, just a week before a general election where the male party is ineligible to participate.

Khan, who was removed as the Prime Minister in 2022, is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for corruption and claims that the charges against him are politically motivated.

In Wednesday's court case, the accusations centered around the couple receiving state gifts during their time in office, while the Tuesday case, resulting in a 10-year sentence, was related to leaking classified state documents. It is believed that both sentences will be served simultaneously, although this hasn't been confirmed.

The court has also mandated the couple to pay a fine of approximately 1.5 billion rupees (£4.2m; $5.3m).

Additionally, Khan's political party, PTI, has stated that the sentencing will disqualify their leader from engaging in political activities for a decade, prohibiting him from holding public office.

Khan's lawyers said they would be launching an appeal to Pakistan's High Court in both cases.
