Reportedly, a Rwandan man named Callixte Nzamwita has chosen to live in isolation for 55 years due to what is described as an 'extreme fear of women.'
The 71-year-old Nzamwita allegedly initiated this self-imposed exile at the age of 16, barricading himself inside his home to avoid any interactions with women.
According to reports, all aspects of his life, including sleeping, cooking, and even urinating, occur within the confines of his isolated dwelling.
Although gynophobia, a fear of women, is not officially recognized as a mental disorder, it is clinically categorized as a specific phobia.
In a YouTube video by Afrimax TV, Nzamwita stated that he locked himself inside and erected a fence around his house to ensure that women do not come near him.
According to a neighbor interviewed by Afrimax for their video, attempts to assist Nzamwita have been met with resistance. The neighbor mentioned, "When we try to help him, he doesn’t want us to come closer or talk to him. Instead, we give him things by tossing them into his house." Despite his reluctance to allow proximity, Nzamwita reportedly accepts assistance from a distance.
Living an isolated and solitary life may seem daunting for many, but Nzamwita seems content with the lifestyle he has purportedly maintained for over 50 years. Despite appearing frail and unwell in the video, he seems determined to continue his chosen way of life. Nzamwita expressed, "The way I live is enough for me. I didn’t have any idea of having a woman, and I’m okay with that. I do not want women around me because they make me really scared."
NHS advice on specific phobias indicates that they revolve around a particular object, animal, situation, or activity. These phobias often develop during childhood or adolescence and may lessen in severity as one grows older. Examples include a fear of specific animals or activities.
