A 40-year-old woman named Amina Noor, residing in Harrow, north-east London, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for taking a three-year-old British child to Kenya for female genital mutilation (FGM).

This marks the first conviction of assisting a non-UK person in performing FGM. Noor underwent the same procedure as a child for cultural reasons.

At the trial in the Old Bailey, it was revealed that Noor had taken the child to a private house in Kenya for the procedure in 2006.

The judge described the crime as "truly horrific and abhorrent" and emphasized its irreversible impact on the victim's life.

Noor justified her actions by cultural beliefs and fears of being cursed or disowned if she refused.

The victim, now 21, expressed discomfort with the case being public, stating her discomfort with strangers discussing her body.

She suffered greatly from the procedure, crying in pain all night afterward.

The crime came to light when she confided in her English teacher at 16, leading to medical examination confirming complete removal of her clitoris.

Noor's upbringing in Somalia and later move to Kenya during civil war, then to the UK at 16, was detailed during the trial.

The police emphasized the importance of building trust with affected communities to protect victims of FGM.

Det Sup Andy Furphy said the police wanted to build trust with people affected by FGM so they could help protect them

Faty Kane from ActionAid UK stressed the need for community-based efforts alongside legal measures to combat FGM.

The prosecution underscored the illegality of performing FGM in the UK or facilitating it abroad for British nationals.

The victim's anonymity is protected, regardless of the outcome of any investigation or prosecution.

Only one other successful prosecution for FGM had occurred previously in 2019, involving a woman from Walthamstow, east London.
