The current Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged citizens to refrain from associating security agencies, educators, and public servants with particular political affiliations.
He mentioned that it was time for society to stop consistently associating security personnel and public servants with political affiliations simply due to disagreements on certain matters.
"He emphasized that if these institutions are hindered from functioning effectively, the nation's democracy will suffer. The Deputy Majority Leader of Parliament and the NPP Parliamentary candidate for the Effutu Constituency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, conveyed this message during a delegate's conference for his nomination at Effutu Ateitu, a community in the Effutu Municipality, ahead of the December 7 election. He cited recent criticisms of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, by certain party members who disagreed with him on security issues, and even called for his dismissal, referring to these actions as 'inappropriate'."
"Instead of advocating for their reassignment or dismissal, let's express dissent towards some of their policies and critique them."
He voiced worry about the widespread politicization of nearly every national matter, stating that this trend was detrimental to the nation. He called on the public to embrace tolerance for differing viewpoints and collaborate, even in times of disagreement, for Ghana's progress. The MP emphasized that citizens should not be misled into perceiving parliamentarians as adversaries, as sometimes depicted on television. He noted that they were colleagues who rarely engaged in conflict with each other.
"The NPP upholds diversity, where equal opportunities are merit-based, regardless of one's religion or ethnicity. This principle has been showcased through the party's choice of flagbearer. We are committed to working tirelessly alongside the flagbearer to secure victory and break the eight." (GNA)
