President Akufo-Addo has annulled the designation of 24 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as communicated in a letter to the Minister of Local Government and Decentralisation, Dan Botwe.
The President cited compliance with Article 243(3) (B) of the constitution and Section 20 (3) (b) of the Local Government Act, 2014, as the basis for this directive.
Akufo-Addo emphasized that the directive is effective immediately, and replacements will be disclosed in due course.
During his second term, the President postponed the appointment of MMDCEs for more than nine months, prompting concerns about the efficient functioning of the metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies.
The reasons for the sudden revocation, just 11 months before the conclusion of Akufo-Addo’s tenure, remain unclear.
