The 67th National Independence Day Celebration is scheduled to take place at the recently constructed Youth Resource Centre in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern region, on Wednesday, March 6. The theme for this year's event, "Our Democracy, Our Pride", was introduced in Koforidua yesterday, along with the unveiling of the anniversary logo.
The President of Cote d'Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, is anticipated to attend the event as the Guest of Honour, while President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will preside over the ceremony. A total of 21 contingents from various security services and 11 schools in the Eastern Region will participate in the parade, along with other cultural groups.
Dignitaries including former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama are expected to be present. Also in attendance will be the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Supreme Court Justices, and all 275 Members of Parliament (MPs).
The President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, also known as the Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, along with all 11 paramount chiefs in the region, are expected to attend. Additionally, members of the diplomatic corps representing 120 countries, members of the Council of State, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will be present. Eighteen groups from various organizations across 16 regions will also participate in the event.
Regarding the rotation of the venue for the Independence Day celebration, Mr. Lord Commey, the Director of Operations at the Presidency and Chairman of the National Planning Committee, mentioned that since 2017, President Akufo-Addo decided to rotate the location of the celebration instead of holding it exclusively in Accra, the capital city. This decision aims to stimulate the economies of different regions and enhance their exposure to the international community. Mr. Commey expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre and anticipated that this year's celebration would be the most successful yet.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, expressed satisfaction that the region had been chosen to host the national event, highlighting the potential economic boost and the opportunity to showcase the region's vibrant culture to a wider audience. He assured that thorough preparations had been undertaken to ensure a memorable and successful celebration.
The minister expressed his pride in being involved in this historic occasion as the President's representative in the region. He extended gratitude to the President for selecting the region for the event and for his dedication to national progress. Mr. Acheampong urged the participation of various stakeholders including the people, chiefs, queen mothers, political parties, youth groups, traders, and artisans to collectively contribute to making the event unforgettable.
