Laryea Kingston
Former Ghanaian winger Laryea Kingston has expressed his keenness to take on the coaching role for the Black Stars if given the chance. This comes as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) searches for a new head coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton. A dedicated committee of five members has been tasked with leading the selection process.
Hughton's departure followed the Black Stars' disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. With 42 caps and six goals for the national team under his belt, Kingston believes he can lead the team back to its former success.
Currently serving as the assistant coach for the Black Starlets, the 43-year-old confidently highlights his qualifications, pointing to his experience and understanding of the demands of international football. Kingston expressed his readiness for the challenge in an interview with Graphic Sports, stating, "I know the level at which I am now."
If appointed, Kingston would follow in the footsteps of former players like Charles Kwablan Akonnor and James Kwasi Appiah, who have previously coached the national team. The GFA has set a criterion for the new coach to have at least 15 years of coaching experience.
Apart from Kingston, other contenders for the coaching position include Maxwell Konadu and Michael Osei, who have also submitted their applications for consideration.
