Ningo-Prampram lawmaker Samuel Nartey George has said the stance of former President John Dramani Mahama on the issue of homosexuality is bold and decisive.
Sam George commended Mr. Mahama for displaying strong leadership qualities by publicly declaring his stance on the issue.
He praised Mahama's boldness, decisiveness, and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. Sam George, a sponsor of the anti-gay bill, expressed confidence in Mahama's position, recalling past instances where the former President faced criticism for his stand on homosexuality. Sam George affirmed his support for Mahama, emphasizing that history would remember him positively, and he assured Mahama of the country's solidarity with him on this matter.
Mr Mahama had indicated that he does not support the promotion of gay activities in the country because his faith as a Christian belonging to the Assemblies of God Church is against it.
Parliament is currently deliberating on legislation targeting LGBTQ activities in Ghana through a Private Members' motion, gaining significant backing from faith-based groups. The proposed law, known as the Anti-gay/LGBTQ bill or the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has sparked controversy due to its perceived severity.
The bill aims to criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and engagement in homosexuality. Penalties could include up to ten years in prison for LGBTQ+ advocates and three years for self-identifying individuals. Additionally, the legislation seeks to deny health services, including HIV medication, to the LGBTQ community.
During a public forum in Koforidua as part of his 'Building Ghana Tour' on January 31, 2024, former President Mahama, also the flagbearer of the NDC, voiced his opposition to the bill. Citing his faith as an Assemblies of God member, he explained that his religious beliefs prohibit him from supporting LGBTQ practices. He emphasized the traditional understanding of gender roles, stating that his faith rejects the idea of same-sex marriages or gender transitions. Mahama affirmed his conviction that individuals are created as either men or women by nature, and altering one's gender is not in line with his personal faith.
