SSNIT donates GH¢1m for pensioners’ healthcare

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has once again reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the National Pensioners Association (NPA) by presenting a cheque worth GH¢1 million. This contribution is specifically designated to bolster the healthcare provisions for pensioners enrolled in the NPA's Pensioners Medical Scheme (PMS). SSNIT's pledge to prioritize the well-being of pensioners under the SSNIT Scheme in the country, which was initially made in 2017, continues to be upheld through such gestures.

This recent donation marks a continuation of SSNIT's support for the NPA. Previous instances include contributions of GH¢300,000.00 and GH¢500,000.00 in 2018 and 2019, respectively, to aid the Pensioners Medical Scheme. Additionally, in 2021, SSNIT provided the NPA with a brand new Toyota Hilux double cabin pickup vehicle to address transportation challenges faced by its members.

The Director-General of SSNIT, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, reiterated the Trust's unwavering support towards the NPA's activities and welfare during a ceremony held at the SSNIT Pension House in Accra. He emphasized SSNIT's enduring commitment to the well-being of pensioners, underscoring the value the Trust places on their contributions to the nation's workforce during their active years.

Mr. Stephen Boakye, the General Secretary of the NPA, conveyed gratitude to SSNIT's Management for their consistent backing of the Pensioners Medical Scheme. He affirmed the harmonious relationship between the NPA and SSNIT and assured that the funds would be utilized as intended.

A beneficiary, Mr. Confidence Kofi Adjayi, shared his positive experience with the Pensioner Medical Scheme, highlighting its crucial role in covering his medical expenses, particularly for eye care.

Established in September 2014, the Pensioners Medical Scheme (PMS) serves as a vital support system for members' healthcare needs, complementing services provided under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). As of December 31, 2023, a total of 3,778 pensioners have benefited from the PMS, demonstrating its significant impact within the pensioner community.

The Association is actively engaged in discussions with their Insurance Provider, Liberty Insurance Company, to expand the coverage of the Scheme to include additional ailments, reflecting their commitment to continuously enhance healthcare support for members. This proactive approach aims to alleviate the financial burden associated with healthcare expenses, ensuring members can access necessary medical services without undue financial strain.
