Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, the head of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC)
UTAG strongly rebuked Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC), in response to his recent statements regarding Book and Research Allowances (BRA).
The association conveyed deep disappointment at what they viewed as disrespectful and uninformed comments made by the Vice Chancellor during a public lecture hosted by the S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies.
In a Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) video report, Professor Kwansah-Aidoo expressed skepticism about the relevance of book and research allowances (BRA), indicating a lack of thorough understanding regarding its importance.
UTAG perceives these remarks as representative of a persistent trend where academics assume leadership roles and subsequently disregard the vital support mechanisms that aided their career advancement.
Dr. Abena Mensah, UTAG President, remarked, "His dismissive and disagreeable comments indicate a failure to recognize the pivotal role played by the BRA."
"The significance of the BRA extends beyond academic publications; it serves as a pillar for the professional growth of our faculty members and enriches the overall educational environment. As a critical element fostering research excellence, the BRA bolsters scholarly endeavors and contributes to the advancement of university communities. Beyond its role in scholarly publications, research findings also enrich teaching methodologies in classrooms and have widespread societal significance.
"We recognize the necessity for occasional policy evaluations," highlighted Dr. Mensah. "Nevertheless, we strongly object to assessments based on a lack of understanding. Decisions concerning our universities should be well-informed, aligning with their fundamental objectives."
UTAG has requested a public apology from Professor Kwansah-Aidoo and encouraged all parties to acknowledge the critical contribution of the BRA in the progression of Ghana's academic sphere.
