History of University of Ghana

The University of Ghana operates on a collegiate system and consists of the following colleges:

- College of Basic and Applied Sciences (website: www.cbas.ug.edu.gh)

- College of Health Sciences (website: www.chs.ug.edu.gh)

- College of Humanities (website: www.coh.ug.edu.gh)





Additionally, the university houses various research institutions and centers for academic pursuit and research, including the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIR) (website: www.noguchimedres.org), the Centre for Tropical, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the Regional Institute for Population Studies (website: rips-ug.edu.gh), the Institute for Environmental and Sanitation Studies (website: iess.ug.edu.gh), and the Institute for Statistical, Social and Economic Research (website: isser.edu.gh).



In line with its vision to become a globally recognized research-intensive institution, the University of Ghana has identified four priority areas for research collaboration to enhance its research output: 

- Malaria Research

- Trans-disciplinary Research into Climate Change Adaptation

- Enhancing Food Production and Processing

- Development Policy and Poverty Monitoring and Evaluation


The university is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders to foster national development. Faculty members are actively engaged in research endeavors aimed at informing national policy-making, often in partnership with international institutions.


The University of Ghana maintains affiliations with numerous Ghanaian and international institutions. As a leading institution in higher education, it has established various partnership agreements with universities across Africa, Europe, and North America for student and faculty exchanges, as well as collaborative research efforts.



With a student population exceeding 38,000, including those enrolled in regular, sandwich, and distance education programs, as well as students from affiliate institutions, the university attracts a diverse international student body from over 70 countries. Its reputation as one of Africa's premier universities makes it a top destination for academics, researchers, and students alike.
