The Ghana Statistical Services has disclosed that Ghana's economy measured GH¢841.63 billion in 2023, including net indirect taxes of approximately GH¢58.74 billion. This marked a significant increase from the GH¢614.33 billion estimated for 2022.
In terms of sectoral contributions to GDP, the services sector held the largest share at GH¢357.34 billion, constituting 45.6% of GDP. Following closely was the industry sector with GH¢247.941 billion, accounting for about 31.7% of GDP, while agriculture contributed GH¢177.606 billion, representing 22.7% of GDP.
Within the services sector, the top five sub-sectors by GDP share were Crops (19.4%), Trade; Repair of Vehicles, Household Goods (18.3%), Mining and Quarrying (12.9%), Manufacturing (12.1%), and Transport and Storage (6.0%).
Regarding GDP growth, the last quarter of 2023 saw the highest real GDP growth rate of 3.8% across all four quarters, with the Industry sector showing improvement from a consistent contraction in the preceding quarters to an expansion of 1.6%.
The Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, measured in local currency, has more than doubled since 2018, rising from GH¢9,813 to GH¢25,349. However, from a US dollar perspective, the income per head has remained relatively stable over the past six years, fluctuating between a high of $2,453 and a low of $2,126.
In terms of overall GDP growth, Ghana's economy expanded by 2.9% in 2023, surpassing the Finance Ministry's revised estimate of 1.5%, although it was slightly lower than the 3.1% growth recorded in 2022
